杭州植物园创建于1956年，地处杭州市西湖区桃源岭，北纬30°15′，东经120°16′，占地248.46公顷，园内地势西北高，东南低，中间多波形起伏。海拔10―165m之间，丘陵与谷地相间，大小水池甚多，土壤属红壤和黄壤，ph4.9―6.5，肥力适中。是一所具有公园外貌、科学内涵、以科学研究为主，并向大众开放，进行植物科学和环境科学知识普及的地方性植物园，隶属于杭州市园林文物管理局。
本园现有各类专业技术人员36人（含高级职称者10人，中级职称者11人，助理工程师8人），已初步形成一支实力较强的科技队伍。园内建有植物分类区、经济植物区、观赏植物区、竹类植物区等专类园区以及为科研、科普、旅游和生产服务的众多设施。
50年来，杭州植物园与国内外同行进行了广泛的学术交流和种子、种苗交换。从美国、日本、澳大利亚、法国、德国、俄罗斯等48个国家369个单位引进植物；与国内28个省、市的40余家单位建立了种子种苗交换关系。至今全园已收集国内外植物3458种（含品种），分别隶属于223科、1209属；压制收藏正号腊叶标本70，000余号，隶属于221科，1024属，正、副号标本达110000余份，是浙江省植物标本收藏最多的单位之一。园内收藏中外文科技图书一万余册。每年接待中外游客及来园教学实习的农、林、医、园林等专业大中专院校师生120―150万人次。50年来，杭州植物园共取得101项研究项目，有91项研究成果获奖，其中一项获1978年全国科学大会奖。
