hua shan is the highest of china’s five sacred mountains.
it is 120 kilometers east of xian.
it has five peaks that resemble the petals of a flower.
the highest peak is 2180 meters (7085 feet).
we had had discussions about going to hua shan with some graduate students from computer science.
that didn’t work out due to changes in schedules on both sides.
also, they were planning to do the climb at night to be able to reach the peak at sunrise.
that did not appeal to us.
we wanted to spend a night on the mountain.
fran’s department arranged a trip for us, making reservations at the simple hotel on the north peak.
they sent two graduate students to accompany us, though they had not been to hua shan before.
we met them at 8:00 on saturday morning and took a taxi to the train station.
there we asked around and located a mini-bus.
the bus made a couple of stops.
one was to see a presentation about the traditional medicines grown on the mountain and a chance to buy some of them.
it probably would have been interesting if we understood chinese.
our guides gave us the general outline about what was said.
the other stop was a quick lunch stop.
there are two approaches to hua shan.
[chinese proverb: “there is one road and only one road to hua shan,” meaning that sometimes the hard way is the only way.
] the west entrance involves 10 kilometers of walking on a road before you start climbing.
we went with the east entrance, where the bus brings you to the base of a cable car that goes up to the 1500 meter north peak.
our plan was to walk up to the north peak, then climb to the four other peaks the next day and take the cable car down.
we started the climb in the early afternoon.
the path consists of stone steps with rough chain link handrails in the narrowest areas (we wore our bicycling gloves for hand protection).
physically, it is more like climbing the steps of a skyscraper than trails at home.
however, the temperature was about 95 degrees and there was not much shade.
we brought lots of water, including some bottles that we froze and some gatorade that we got at the fancy department store in downtown xian.
there are plenty of refreshment stands along the way where you can buy bottled water, the chinese equivalent of gatorade, and other drinks or snacks at a premium price.
we reached the north peak before 4:00 pm and rested at the hotel.
our room was basic, but comfortable and clean enough.
because water is scarce on the mountain, there were neither showers nor sinks available for washing.
in that sense the experience felt like camping, but we were sleeping in a big tent!
after dinner at the hotel restaurant, we spent some time talking with our guides.
we were a bit surprised to find that they both think of japan negatively, but like the u.
it seems that japan’s wwii behavior in china has not been forgotten, and is emphasized in school.
we saw a beautiful sunset and watched the sky become resplendent with thousands of stars, including the milky way galaxy.
this was the clearest sky that we have seen in china.
the fresh air at hua shan is a treat!
our guides had both been planning to get up at 4:00 am to watch the sunrise.
fran and i made sleep a priority.
we did happen to wake up a bit before sunrise (our room faced east) and went outside to watch the sky become rosy.
ironically, our guides missed the sunrise because they had stayed up late watching the european soccer championships on the television in their room
the plan for the day was to climb the other four peaks, but we reserved the right to shorten the route.
the first part was a steep climb to middle peak.
after the low north peak, all the others are at roughly XX meters.
there were crowds on the way to middle peak – mostly chinese hikers but we did see a few other wai guo (foreigners) as well.
we visited two taoist temples en route to middle peak.
each one had an altar with incense and offerings of fruit.
the friendly monks invited us to say a prayer or to send blessings to loved ones.
fran accepted their invitation.
at the first temple, she lit incense sticks and knelt on a cushion in front of the altar saying a silent prayer for our safe journey to the various summits of hua shan (the prayer was answered).
at the second temple, she knelt on a cushion in front of the altar and sent silent blessings to several friends who are experiencing challenging situations in their lives at present.
after each blessing, she leaned forward and the monk struck a drum.
after middle peak, the crowds got much thinner.
the next was east peak, which had a steep ladder climbing rock.
fran was dubious about this ascent, but realized that the ladder wasn’t so bad and went for it.
that was a good decision because we were then able to do a loop and the trails got almost empty at this point.
after skirting the top of a cliff with a steep dropoff on both sides, we had a pleasant walk to south peak and west peak.
there was even a small amount of dirt trail! the summit of south peak was the highest point on hua shan, so of course we asked another hiker to take a photo of our guides and us.
the views from the tops of each peak were beautiful.
hua shan and the surrounding mountains are very rugged and remind us somewhat of hiking in the southwestern united states or the sierras.
we took a route that eventually brought us to the main line returning down from middle to north peak.
we were happy to have ascended each of the five peaks (petals) of flower mountain.
by cable car (the longest in asia), it was just 7 minutes down to the park entrance.
we caught a shuttle bus into town, then transferred to a bus for xian.
our guides told us that we had walked up and down a total of 4000 stairs! we were glad that we did not have this information when we started.
for three days after returning home, our sore leg muscles instructed us to take the elevator to our fifth floor apartment rather than climbing the stairs.

Dajingmen Gate witnessed the prosperity and downfall of the frontier tea-horse trade in the Ming Dynasty. It also made merchants both home and abroad gather in the leather metropolis, i.e. It became an important commercial pass because of the well-known leather, lamb and dried mushroom.. In 1673,the twelfth year of Kangxi,emperor of the Qing,Wu Sangui rebelled.Under the leading of the emperor Kangxi,thousands of brave Qing soldiers outside the Great Wall crossed Dajingmen Gate in force and marched southward,making a foundamental contribution to the repression of the “Three Region Rebellion”.Shortly after that,Ge erdan,chief of a northern tribe,led his army to invade and disturb southward for several times,making a substantial loss to the business between Zhangjiakou and Kulun,which is Wulanbatuo nowadays.So the eight business men who had provided the Qing with consistant arms and surplies before and after Qing’s crossing of the Great Wall,and therefore were granted great honor,wrote to emperor Kangxi,asking for a suppression.
The emperor had the idea to suppress them long before,so in the year1697,he led punitive expedition against Ge erdan in person for the third time.The main troop acrossed the very place: Dajingmen Gate,and marched northword.The local people gave a warm farewell to the army and served a good refreshment.Finally this war ended with the chief’s suiside.Under the suggestion of the local people when heard the happy news,a Literator called Zhang Zicheng wrote down some words:内外一统,which means all around China unified.Then they carved it on a piece of flat cliff.And now,although 300 yesrs has gone,it remains legible and in a good condition after so many years of corrosion of wind and rain.It embodies Chinese people’s desire for unity of country and peace of living.

旅行车从乌鲁木齐出发经过两天近16个小时的行驶，终于在黄昏时分抵达喀纳斯的门户——贾登峪山谷。
首先映入眼帘的是漫山遍野的松林，微风吹来，松涛阵阵。
由大气环流带来的大西洋的暖湿气团经过万里跋涉抵达喀纳斯，每年给喀纳斯带来多达 1066毫米的充沛降水。
这里是植物的王国，有近800种珍惜植物在这里生根发芽、茁壮成长，这里是从俄罗斯、哈萨克斯坦自然延伸至我国境内的唯一一片南西伯利亚泰加林自然保护区，在海拔1300米至2300米的山坡上自然生长着茂密的落叶松、云杉、冷杉、白杨、白桦以及珍贵的新疆五针松。
由于交通不便，长期以来喀纳斯地区人迹罕至，珍贵的物种得以完好地保存了下来。
喀纳斯风景区可以用一山、二湖、三湾、四迷、五个唯一来概述：
一山，即阿尔泰山友谊峰。
友谊峰海拔4374米，终年积雪，巍然屹立在祖国的西北端，是我国与蒙古、俄罗斯、哈萨克斯坦的界山，也是喀纳斯湖湖水的发源地。
二湖，是指喀纳斯湖和白湖。
喀纳斯湖形成于距今约20万年前的第四纪冰川时期，湖面海拔1374米，四周群山环抱，湖面最宽处约2600米，湖水最深处188米，湖水面积约45平方公里，自北向南犹如一个长长的豆荚蜿蜒流淌在长约25公里的喀纳斯峡谷里。
当年成吉思汗的军师耶律楚材西行来到喀纳斯，被喀纳斯秀美的景色所打动，遥望着那如珍珠一般散落在峡谷中变幻莫测的319个湖泊，欣然写道：
谁知西域逢佳境
始信东君不世情
圆沼方池三百所
澄澄春水一池平
白湖，又名阿克库勒，位于喀纳斯湖东北38公里处友谊峰脚下。
三湾，指的是卧龙湾、月亮湾、神仙湾。
卧龙湾位于喀纳斯风景区之首，喀纳斯河水流经此河段骤然变得宽阔平静，形成一个面积约6平方公里的湖泊，湖的中部出现了一个小岛，远看酷似一条高大的剑龙，尾巴高高翘起静卧在湖中心。
由卧龙湾前行1公里就来到了月亮湾，喀纳斯河水流经这里形成了一个长达4公里长的“之”字形，河湾静谧的好似一弯月牙，河水随着一日之间光照的不同，变换着不同的色彩。
最绝妙的是河中心的两个河心洲，酷似两只仙人的大脚印，运气好的话，还能看到五个大脚指头。
传说，这两个大脚印是当年成吉思汗率军西征在此涉水过河时留下的痕迹，现在还经常可以看到转场路过此地的牧民下马匍匐在地顶礼膜拜。
由月亮湾前行3公里就到了神仙湾，这里是一片宽阔的水域，河水将河心洲分成若干个小岛，岛上郁郁葱葱地生长着稀有的云杉、白桦和落叶松。
河水流经这里变得异常平缓，微风吹来碧波荡漾，河水在阳光的照射下闪闪发光，好似撒下一片珍珠，这里犹如仙界一般应该是神仙居住的地方。
四迷，指喀纳斯“湖怪”之迷、千米枯木长堤之迷、白湖之迷和图瓦人来历之迷。
喀纳斯“湖怪”之迷：传说喀纳斯湖有“湖怪”，当地图瓦人放牧的牛、羊、马、驼去湖边饮水时，常被拖进湖中作了点心。
“湖怪”常常在天刚亮或黄昏时出现，至于“湖怪”长的什么样，谁也没有看到过。
据说，有一个图瓦牧民去亲戚家喝喜酒，回家时已近黄昏，路过喀纳斯湖下马转身冲着山林小解，忽然听到身后“哗啦”一声响，赶忙回头，发现他的马不见了，湖面上隐约看到一对 “212”小汽车车灯般阴冷的大眼睛缓缓沉入湖中。
他惊得酒醒了一半，连忙向村子里跑去，边跑边喊：“212”把我的马吃掉了!
村民们听说后，纷纷组织起来，制作了一个大大的大钓钩，用一头牛做诱饵，用牛皮筋编成绳，绳的另一头套上了二十匹马。
等了一天又一天，第三天，终于有了动静，一声令下，二十匹马拼命往上拉，直累的二十匹马口吐白沫，绷断了牛皮绳，连“湖怪”的影子居然也没有见着。
新疆大学生物系曾经组织考察队，于1985年7月20日，在观鱼亭上用高倍望眼镜观察到身长约15米的大红鱼，最多时一群竟达68条。
但是喀纳斯湖有没有“湖怪”至今仍然是一个迷。
千米枯木长堤之迷：在喀纳斯湖的北岸，有一条一米多高，2000多米长的枯木长堤。
这是喀纳斯山上的树木枯死后滚下山落入湖中形成的，每当湖水上涨枯木就漂浮在湖面北岸一带，湖水下落枯木就在北岸友谊峰山脚下形成一条千米枯木长堤，为什么这些枯木不随波逐流顺水向下游漂流呢? 至今仍然是一个迷。
据说，是这些枯木留恋曾经生养它们的故土喀纳斯而久久不愿离去。
白湖之迷：白湖，又名阿克库勒，位于喀纳斯湖东北38公里处，海拔1954米，面积约10平方公里。
由于湖水酷似牛奶，远望一片乳白色而得名，白湖的水注入喀纳斯湖后，染的喀纳斯湖的北部湖水也是一片奶白。
白湖的形成至今仍然是喀纳斯之迷。
图瓦人来历之迷：相传，很久很久以前成吉思汗征战西域，他的次子察合台派遣了一支先头部队逢山开道，遇水搭桥，后来，这支队伍在阿尔泰山的深山老林中迷了路，神秘地消失了。
现在，在喀纳斯湖畔居住着一个原始部落，他们以山林为家，以放牧、狩猎为生，砍来山上的松木搭建起木屋，剥下厚厚的兽皮抵御严寒，使用原始的炊具调制出香喷喷的奶酒，他们不与外族通婚，不与他人争斗，他们以图瓦人自居，以成吉思汗为自己的先祖，古训说牢记祖先的名字是每一个图瓦人子孙的责任，他们世代悠闲地生活在喀纳斯这片世外桃园中，被称做“林中百姓”。
今天，在喀纳斯生活的图瓦人约有1400人，其中有700人居住在喀纳斯湖畔的喀纳斯乡，其余人生活在禾木喀纳斯和阿尔泰的深山老林中。
喀纳斯居住着一位神奇的老人，名叫额尔德什，今年65岁，他生在喀纳斯，长在喀纳斯，深爱着喀纳斯，他用喀纳斯湖边采来的苇草制作出一管“苏尔”，他能用“苏尔”吹奏出美妙的音乐。
我们围坐在额尔德什老人身边请他吹奏一曲，他说：“吹吗? 好!吹。
”额尔德什老人吹奏的是他最拿手的——“美丽的喀纳斯”。
只见老人双目微闭，将“苏尔”竖起来贴在唇边，随着气流的呼出，手指的移动，那美妙的笛声充满了整个木屋，一瞬间，我们仿佛来到了蓝天白云下，来到了美丽的喀纳斯湖畔：山风吹过，树叶婆娑，湖水荡漾，温暖的阳光洒满大地，万物在生长，虫鸟在鸣唱，天空出现美丽的彩虹… …
笛声停住了，万籁具静，我们每个人脸上都挂满了泪珠。
在这远离尘嚣的'地方，在大自然的怀抱，在神奇的额尔德什老人身边，我感到了神的存在，我听到了天籁之声。
默默地接过老人递过来的“苏尔”，它出奇的轻，薄薄的笛身，细细的笛管，仅开有三个孔，长约五十厘米。
我们一边传看着这件奇妙的乐器，一边向额尔德什老人提出了一个问题：您在吹奏这首曲子时想到了什么?
老人深深吸了一口气，说道：我从小生长在喀纳斯，我看到天神将雨滴洒向人间，雨滴飘飘荡荡落到了树上，发出哗啦啦的响声，又顺着树梢滑落到大地，雨水渗入泥土，顺着山谷汇集成涓涓溪流，最后流向喀纳斯湖。
风吹来了，湖面碧波荡漾;太阳出来了，树木使劲地生长，整个喀纳斯充满了生机。
我吹奏这首曲子时，这些景象就在我的眼前，每天，我都要上山去看那些树，它们是和我一起张大的，有些比我还年长。
老人异常兴奋，话匣子打开就象额尔齐斯河的河水滔滔不绝：我想教我的儿子学习吹“苏尔”，但是他总是学不会，他是小学的老师，他有工作，很忙。
看来“苏尔”的演奏技巧快要失传了。
如果将我们伟大祖国的版图比喻为一只昂首报晓的雄鸡，那么，喀纳斯就是雄鸡高高翘起的灿烂夺目的尾翎。
这里有我国唯一一条注入北冰洋的大河——额尔齐斯河;
这里是南西伯利亚泰加林在我国唯一的自然延伸地;
这里是亚洲唯一的瑞士风光;
这里是我国蒙古族图瓦人唯一的聚集地;
这里的额尔德什老人是世界上唯一能用“苏尔”吹奏三重和弦的人。
